I almost never do any speedwork. At what kind of pace was your 800?

From runcarrie on Sat, Mar 22, 2008 at 21:20:15

ok, sorry I'm not as knowledgeable about this distance stuff as I should be for a runner. I think maybe I'll go to the track and time myself to find out how fast I can do an 800. I'll let you know when I do. How are your feet by the way? Sidewalk treating you nice?

I think the question thats burning everyones minds is...What shoes did you get?!

I agree with the philosophy of "take what you can get" when running. I look at guys like Sasha and am amazed where all the miles come from.

From runcarrie on Sat, Mar 22, 2008 at 21:41:09

You'll have to ask Steve for the technical name of my shoes, I call them shiny. hehe Just kidding, they are Brooks with some good stabilization for my funky knees. I really love them, and they ARE pretty!

I did the circle in Bloomington today. I like the run because it has some small hills and is just about a 5K from my front door and back. I had a little bit of an tummy ache when I got done, I had lunch only half an hour before. Oh well, it's a beautiful day in St. George and I'm going to play outside some more.

Circle again.  Averaged a 9.20min/mile   I ranged from a 7:40 to  10:15 going up a hill. I had a headwind on the last mile that didn't make me happy, but what ya gonna do?

Couple of questions--I read in Runner's World that for each pound you drop (if you have any to drop) you earn 2 seconds a mile.  Any thoughts if it's for real?

And for about a half mile or so during my run my left shoulder and up into my neck get really painful.  Do I just need to relax it? If so how?

Anyway, thats it.  Hope you all had a wonderful run!

We've been fighting the wind up here for the last couple of days as well. Sometimes you feel like you're just running in place :)

I definitely think there's a relationship between weight and speed, but if you were to graph it, it wouldn't be a straight line. There are other factors in play, of course, so a five pound weight loss might not make any difference in speed. Other times you might get faster when your weight hasn't changed at all. That being said, as my weight comes down over the summer my race times start to improve.

I know others who get the same soreness in their neck when they run. In some cases I think it's caused by a little extra tension and sideways rotation in the shoulders. It might help to relax and shake out your hands at your side every few minutes as you run and then make sure that your arms are swinging up and back and not across your chest.

Treadmill.  I ran at the gym before our "biggest loser" weigh-in.  A couple of people on my team  worked out with me so I was pretty happy about that.  Everyone is doing so well!  I'm thrilled with them!  I was in such a great mood that I was full of energy, I ran a 9min/mile hoping to keep it up for quite a while.  But I stopped early to help set up at the weigh in.  Never got back to it--bummer

No miles at all the last two days. My oldest-the runner- was driving home after school yesterday and was hit by a man that ran a stop sign. She is mostly ok, her arm got a burn from the air bag and she has whiplash too. Other than that it is a lot of bruises and a sore little body. The car is a total loss, but it could have been much worse and we are feeling very blessed she is alive. So after I get our heads to stop spinning I'll get back to the pavement. Thanks all.

Finally back for a run. It was hard after a week off, but I got five miles in. My daughter is doing okay, but she won't be running for a long time. She will be going to therapy three times a week until her muscles and everything are strong again.  She is determined to get back to a hundred percent.

I have a 5K on Saturday, but it won't be a fast one. I asked my biggest loser team to sign up for it and all but one of them is coming. The only reason the last one is bailing is she will be out of town. This will be a HUGE deal for these guys, I am so excited about the life style change they are making!

Hey I'm back and I missed you all! I went to Peru with the family to pick up my sister-in-law from her mission. It was so Amazing!!! I didn't get a lick of running in the whole time, but I did hike to the top of Yuini Picchu, and all over the ruins of Machu Picchu. I'm not sad about missing the miles at all. I'm going to get back to it today, (between loads of laundry hehe) and I'll let you know how it goes. Good luck to everyone running Hurricane tomorrow!!!!

P.S. If you want to see some cool pics of my trip my husband posted some on our blog at www.heatonhome.blogspot.com

Okay, so I ran. It was worse than I thought it would be. I did one mile at 10m/m, the next at 9m/m, another at 10m/m, and then walked one more just to prove to myself I could. My heart rate was too high. My breathing never got even. My diet over the last two weeks has been unusual to say the least so I'm hoping that is the problem. I'm going to keep running and hope that I'm back to normal by next Saturday.

Ok, I rode my bike to work and back, a total of seven miles. Then I ran on the treadmill while I was still at the gym. I did a 5.5, that is just slightly under 11 minute miles. I got board of going slow so I increased the incline up to three percent. That made it challenging enough for the moment. I threw in a bunch of ab workouts on the power plate to top it all off.

Do not increase the incline even if you get bored. And do the run outside if you can. If the pace starts feeling too dull, accelerate to a good sprint pace for 10 seconds then ease off. Make a particular effort to not skip days no matter what. Learn to run outside under inconvenient circumstances. Usually if you get up before the start of your day and get your run done there will be very few activities that would compete for your running time.

Carrie - for best results, treat your running like a job. You show up when it rains, snows, and even when you friend you like to visit with does not show up. Why? You do not get paid if you do not show up. Same with running. Your fitness does not improve if you do not do it. Your run must be a given. You need to learn to run unmotivated.

I also have lower back issues. Since I have lost some weight it has helped a lot. But it still gives me problems once in a while. One thing I have found is to not sleep on my back or stomach. I have to stay on a side and it helps to curl into a ball as much as possible. I'm not sure if that is something to help you or not, but I thought I'd throw it out to you. I know how miserable the lower back issues are! Good luck with it.

Really sorry about your back. Good job getting in the miles despite the pain. I know that incline indoors or out (too much up or down) and treadmills and irritate my back. Only advice I can think of. I've been lucky in the back department (but I've seen my husband in lots of back pain) Hope it leaves in a hurry!

Six sweet miles today.  I went to the chiropractor yesterday and I'm feeling much better now. ; ) hehehe

The first two miles I did with my son.  He rode a bike while I ran.  He got tired of that so I rode and he ran for about a mile & a half.  We were at the gym by then so we decided to lift for a little while before we headed back.  We got some good upper body work in.  Anyway, we got done with that and it was time to get home.  We took the trail instead of the road, its a bit longer, but no cars to worry about.  He took off on the bike and I ran.  This time he made it the whole way.  He stopped and waited for me every now and then to give me water.

At the last spot we agreed he'd wait he wasn't there and it started to worry me.  I ran a little bit farther hoping I would see him, but before I got too far a man jumped out of the bushes at me!  Would have scared me big time except it was my husband!  He came out to met me for the last mile or so of the run.  It was nice to run with him.

My average pace was 8:53.  I was surprised I was going that fast, it felt a lot slower.   I was happy to have it done.

OK now that I've had a minute to cool down, it isn't too bad.  Things could be worse.  My back is knotting up and going into spasms.  The doctor said no running, no biking, no lifting, nothing fun.  I have to keep my workouts to yoga for the next week.  Then IF my back can handle it I can start running again next Monday.  Meanwhile its lots of motrin and ice and rest.  I hate sitting around so bad.

The thing with my blood, I'm anemic.  I should have been paying attention because all the signs were there.  I was tired no matter how much sleep I got.  I was bruising extra easy and the bruises were slow to heal.  I was craving sugar loaded carbs and chocolate. If one of my clients came to me with that going on I'd see it right off, but like I said, I wasn't paying attention.

The whole thing is really frustrating.  This is the first time I started training with more than just finishing in mind.  I really want to qualify for Boston at the St. George race.  With such a slow start I'm wondering if it is even possible any more.

So thats it in a nutshell.  I'm going to load up on iron rich foods and practice my tree pose.  Thanks for the concern. YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!!

Good luck with your back! That can really be frustrating, but it shouldn't have much effect on your conditioning. I get those back spasms every year or two. The last one was a few months ago...I was crawling on my hands and knees for a couple of days, but was back running in about a week. You should be in great shape for the marathon if you eat right and gradually build up your endurance and speed.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jun 05, 2008 at 14:40:48

Do not worry too much about qualify in St. George this year. If it happens, it happens, if not, there will be plenty of other opportunities.

Here is a breakfast recipe that I believe is responsible for keeping my iron levels in check even though I do not eat any red meat ever and run 120 miles a week:

uncooked rolled oats, peanuts, dates, plus optionally when available strawberries and/or blackberries, and/or raspberries, and/or blueberries, soy milk, mix it in a bowl, eat until full, second serving if still hungry.

I have been eating some version of the above since 1994 every morning almost without exceptions.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jun 05, 2008 at 14:44:25

Do you or the doctor have any idea what caused the spasms in your back? Have you had something like this before?

I took second in women over all!!!  That sounds so cool!  The thing is that there were only four women that ran the 10K hehe.  I was about 5 or 6 minutes behind the girl that won and 5 or 6 minutes ahead of girl number three.  I had a marginal run for the first four miles, I was dealing with intestinal issues-gross!! But I was still keeping my pace under 9 minute miles. During mile five I faded.  I felt tired, I had some hills, I just didn't do well at all finishing up.

I am glad I did the race tho.  I needed to prove to myself that I could race even with distractions in my life.

Weird run today to be honest.  I took my dog with me for the first four and I don't think I will do that very often.  I was going at a decent pace, but  she would drag on the leash, or just plain stop.  I had to sit and wait for her a couple times.  I thought dogs were good running buddies.  Cami isn't the best.  Oh well, got the miles in so thats cool.  For what I did run I stayed under 10 m/m.  usually a 9m/m

I'm not going to be able to log my runs for another week.  I am going up north for a funeral of a friend and then all next week is girls camp.  I think I have a few girls talked into running a couple miles every morning, but we'll see.  Late nights and altitude seem to change teenage minds about morning activity!

ok so this summer has been a wash out. lame I know.  things just didn't work for me in the running department so I'm giving up the idea of qualifing this year, I'll just try for a respectable finish in St. George. anyway I saw steve today while I my daughter was getting new cross country shoes and got inspired to get outside and put a few miles in, AND record them on the blog!  novel idea I know.

just over three miles  at an average 9:30 pace.  I was totally sweaty and feeling gross tonight.  I really don't like night runs, but i stayed up too late last night reading (breaking dawn of course) so no morning run at all.  I need to get consistant again and that is all there is to it.

the only down side  to the whole thing was i took a good look at my yard as i came home.  i've got some weeding to do...yuck

What a beautiful day for a race!  Pine Vally is wonderful as always, just cool enough to make me want to get moving.  The race was run very well; water stops at the right places, good course directions, and yummy food at the end.  I had a great morning!

A couple of my friends signed up for the run too so we all rode up together.  I loved seeing all the people on the side of the road training for marathon.  What an inspiration!

The start of the run was an gentle downhill.  I had to keep reminding myself to hold back so I would have something left to get back up the hill at the end.  The first half I was doing 8.5m/m.  For the next bit there were some challenging uphill climbs.  I haven't done hill training so combined with the elevation I ended up walking four different times.  Felt like a loser, but so what.  Arriving at the turnaround point put a major smile on my face.

I was able to make up some time here as I let gravity take me down those nasty inclines I had just gone up.  I got a big boost when I saw a friend cheering me on that I didn't even know was up there this weekend. The finish line was coming up quickly and I was used up, but I still felt I was still able to finish strong.

I averaged 9:22, much slower than I wanted--- but until I get invited to the Olympics I have the feeling I will always be slower than I wanted hehe.  Considering my lack of training and the elevation challenge I've decided to feel pretty good about this run. big winks and smilely faces to all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was at my racing weight at the begining of the summer, but I put a few pounds back on.  There isn't much time before marathon to get rid of it again, but i'm going to try anyway.  No reason to pack extra weight for 26 miles if I don't have to!

Good running! I think any weight that you can take off safely will help, as long as your nutrition is good. I think runners eat way too many simple carbs. My weight loss formula is to control portions, eat a ton of vegetables, and make sure I get lots of good quality protein. Instead of bread and pasta, I eat fruit. Just a suggestion. Wishing you well, S. :)

Hey Carrie- Sorry if you're feeling down about the marathon. Best advice I have is to only do it if you WANT to. If not, you can always set your sights on another race (save a sister, painter's, etc). Or if you really want to do the marathon why not walk/run it?

From carrie on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 11:36:07

What a crazy day for a run!  That was the wettest, coldest, most insane run I have ever done!  I am so glad I did it, now that it is over anyway.  My husband and I stayed together the whole race and it was super cool.  I wanted to go home at about Dameron Valley so bad tho!   I saw a friend of mine with an umbrella and a warm coat and she gave me a quick hug to try to get me warm.  I told her that this year it was too cold and just not worth it.  I probably would have bailed and got on the shuttle if Marty hadn't been with me.  I have never seen so many people use those shuttles or the ambulances needed as much as this year. I decided it wasn't too bad as long as I kept moving.  We weren't exactly moving real fast, but we got it done anyway.  I totally enjoyed crossing the finish line with him.  I think that moment is the highlight of my year. I was out on the course for longer than usual, but it was worth it to be with him for his first (and most likely last) marathon.

Thanks to all of you that have been so encouraging and helpful during the last few months of trying to train.  You guys are the best!
